Who Is Rebbie Jackson?

Rebbie Jackson is the eldest child of the notorious musical Jackson family, which includes Michael (RIP), Janet, and seven other siblings. She was born May 29, 1950 in Gary, Indiana as Maureen Reilette Jackson.

Like her siblings, she’s an accomplished musician. She collaborated with brother Michael Jackson to produce her hit “Centipede” in 1984. She started her career as a backup singer for big-name acts like Lou Rawls and Chaka Khan before taking center stage. To date, she has released four solo albums.

Rebbie’s Family

Rebbie Jackson comes from one of the most prestigious families in American music.

Her Parents

She’s the daughter of Joseph (more often referred to as “Joe”) and Katherine Jackson. Joe, the patriarch of the family, pushed his children into music and managed The Jackson 5, which featured five of Rebbie’s brothers. Reportedly, Joe was a strict disciplinarian and abusive toward his children.

In 1965, Rebbie’s mother, Katherine, became a Jehovah’s Witness, and Rebbie then became a devout follower of the religion. Katherine was supportive of Rebbie when she got married at 18, but Joe wasn’t because he wanted Rebbie to pursue a music career instead of family life.

Her Husband

Nathaniel Brown and Rebbie Jackson were high school sweethearts and married for 44 years. He passed away on January 6, 2013 after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. Nathaniel and Rebbie had two daughters (Stacee and Yashi) and a son (Austin).

Her Siblings

Rebbie Jackson is the eldest of 10. These are her siblings:

    • Sigmund Esco “Jackie” Jackson (born May 4, 1951)
    • Toriano Adaryll “Tito” Jackson (born October 15, 1953)

    • Steven Randall “Randy” Jackson (born October 18, 1961)
    • Janet Damita Jo Jackson (born May 16, 1966)

Furthermore, Marlon had a twin named Brandon who died at birth. Also, as a result of Joe’s extramarital affair, Rebbie has a half sister named JohVonnie Jackson.

Tito, Jermaine, Jackie, Marlon, and Michael were the members of The Jackson 5. All of Rebbie’s siblings have been musicians.

All three of Rebbie Jackson’s children are singers. It’s hard to be part of the family and not sing. Stacee and Yashi formed a group called X-Girls, which is now known as Geneva. Austin, also known as Auggie, has been a ghostwriter and a solo artist. He has an album called Highway 85.

On Rebbie’s album Yours Faithfully, Stacee and Yashi did backing vocals and Austin rapped for a remixed version of “Centipede.”

Rebbie’s Music Career

Rebbie Jackson has had a long, illustrious career in music. She started her singing career in 1974 performing with The Jackson 5 in Las Vegas.

Along with her siblings (except Jermaine, who stayed with Motown when the rest of the family moved to CBS Records), Rebbie was featured in a variety series for CBS called The Jacksons, which premiered in 1976 and ran until 1977.  During her time on The Jacksons, Rebbie became motivated to pursue singing at the encouragement of the show’s producer. When she first started her solo career, she was hesitant to use the Jackson name but eventually relented realizing her last name was an asset.

After The Jacksons, she raised her family and sang back-up before releasing her first solo album, Centipede, in 1984. Centipede was a resounding success, and she went on to release three more albums over the course of 14 years.

She still tours throughout the country performing her hit songs, some of her brothers’ famous songs, and Motown classics.

Her song “Centipede,” the title track from her album Centipede, went gold and sold over one million copies. She collaborated with Michael on the song, and it was his first attempt at writing and producing since Thriller.

Additionally, her songs “Reaction” and “Plaything” also reached the top 10 in Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. And due to her popularity in England, she released a compilation album called The Rebbie Jackson Collection in 1996.

Collaborations

Interesting Rebbie Jackson Facts

For Centipede, her husband co-wrote the song “Come Alive Saturday Night” with Randy and Tito. Over the course of her career, she has worked with almost every member of her family.

For the most part, Rebbie has managed to stay out of the tabloids, an impressive feat considering the media attention her family has received. However, there are rumors that she raised Janet Jackson’s secret child.

After Michael’s death, the media speculated that Rebbie would raise Michael’s children, but in August of 2009, Katherine (Rebbie’s mom) was named the legal guardian of Michael’s kids, Prince, Paris, and Blanket.

In 2011, she announced that she was working on a new album. Perhaps we’ll get to rock out to some new Rebbie tunes in the near future.
